members are: Tyree Lush, from Gambo, Newfoundland, guitar, bodhrun, vocals-Dana Arrowsmith, from Sudbury, fiddle and backing vocals-Rafael Rodriguez, from Venezuela, drum kit, percussion and Stephen Tudge from Cold Lake Alberta. Three of the band members are not new to Canada's traditional music scene, although the band has only been on the go for a few months. They develop a unique sound that will reintroduce many Canadians to their own traditional music. According to the band members, they named their band, Uglystick, to remind themselves not to take themselves too seriously. The Uglystick is a percusion instrument made of a mop and beer bottle caps-it epitomizes what music should be about-unashamed, no-frills and good times. The band just produced an
introductory 4 song CD, entitled EP (Extended Play) by Ugly stick. If this music sample is what the band is all about, then their fans and followers are in for a special treat with their music.
Tyree Lush, band member wrote two songs namely; Will I Make It Back Home and D'Arcy and His Boat. The other two songs are entitled; The Keeper and Dark Cove. The CD was produced by Tim Greencorn and Uglystick and recorded at Distortion Studios in Ottawa. The EP is available online as well as some locations in the Ottawa Area, at their shows and will be available on the East Coast very soon.
Tyree Lush was a founding member of the popular band, Celtae, who are now disbanded. His influences were, Ray Johnson (Buddy Whaisname and the Other Fellers) Mark Hiscock (Shanneygannock) on the accordion, Fred Jorganson (The Navigators on the whistles and D'Arcy Broderick (The Fables) for his songs. Stephen Fudge pursued the bass when he was 13 years of age, and has enriched his talent over the years by playing with bands in such broad genres as blues, folk, funk and rock. He then began interest in Celtic music because of his Scottish and Nova Scotian ancestors . Dana Arrowsmith began fiddling at a very early age and she persued her interests by expanding her love of Cape Breton music influences of Ashley MacIssac, Jerry Holland, Winston Fitzgerald and Natalie MacMaster. Rafael Rodriguez fell in love with the drums at an early age, and was influenced by an Italian Artist, Eros Ramazzotti.
This band is on the move, and are planning a full-lenth CD in 2006. They perform around the Ottawa Area at present until their CD is finished. To find out more information about the band, refer to their brand new website, address posted above.
