Gene Pitney, 65 years old, the music singing/songwriter giant from the
1960's, has died in Cardif, Wales April 5/06, while on tour in Engand. Sources said, that Gene had performed the most exuberant performance of his career on Tuesday night. He received a standing ovation following the show and his final song of the night was, TOWN WITHOUT PITY. He was in a midst of a 24 show tour in England. Gene was found dead in his hotel room fully clothed on his back, on Wednesday morning and looked as if went to lie down. The cause of death was of Natural Causes.
He was born in Hartford, Conn., USA. How could we forget the songs he made famous in the 60's namely; The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Only Love Can Break a Heart, I Wanna Love My Life Away, It Hurts To Be In Love, I'm Gonna Be Strong and 24 Hours From Tulsa. His first success as a songwriter was the song he wrote, Rubber Ball which was a No 10 hit for Bobby Vee in 1961. Only Love Can Break a Heart was his biggest US hit, peaking at No 2 on the charts in 1962. The No 1 song at the time was The Crystals, He's A Rebel written by Pitney.
In 1990, Pitney scored his first British No 1-he re-recorded, Something's Gotten Hold of my Heart, a duet with Marc Almond. Pitney even had sucess as a country singer, pairing with Gene always had a strong voice and was liked in the music business. Pitney was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
