He quickly developed a love for the game and in 2003 he was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL entry draft. At 17 he was given a guitar by his parents, and he taught how to put strings into chords and cords into songs. At that time he had no intention to follow a career in music, and was more interested in hockey.
He earned a scholarship and attended Minnesota State University. While there, he continued his interest in music. He excelled in both academics and athletics. While in University, he was nominated for the NCAA Hockey Humanitarian award for his song, The Hero I See, written in memory of a young boy who lost his battle to leukemia at the age of 9.
After college with a Bachelor Science in Psychology, he went to the Vancouver Canucks training camp. After a year of playing hockey in the minor leagues, he decided to leave hockey and pursue a career in music. A career in music was something he never imagined he could pursue, but after a year of injuries, he found himself at a career crossroads.
He teamed up with Multi Award winner Mitch Merrett. Together they produced a self-titled debut CD and featured the hit single, The Best That I Can (Superhero) which reached #20 on the country charts. The second single from the album entitled, Hope, also enjoyed radio play. He recently filmed a TV Special for CMT titled, CMT 4 Tracks. The special highlights Brownlee's strong vocals and skills as a songwriter.
In 2011, Chad has been nominated for a Country Music Award at CMW Music Radio Awards taking place in Toronto in March.
