Meet one of Newfoundland's most popular bands, Shanneyganock. The band comprises of Chris Andrews, Mark Hiscock, Bob Pike and Mike Clarke. The band was formed in 1996. Chris and Mark grew up near the water in the ocean-side communities of Ft. Amherst and Logy Bay, and music has been the dominant force in their lives. Mark is the master of the Newfoundland button accordion. He also plays mandolin and banjo and has a unique and affecting voice. Chris is an amazing singer and he learned the old ballads and shanties with a powerful baritone voice. His voice is often compared to the great voice of the late and great Stan Rogers.
A fellow Newfoundlander, Bob Pike from Stephenville plays bass and Mike Clarke, percussionist. The band released their fourth album in 2004 entitled, Set You Free, and the band finally become the band they always wanted to be, looking forward unafraid, yet anchored firmly in the legacy of the past.
The band is defined as a creature of the night-an apt description for this group of musicians from the east coast of Canada, stationed proudly on their home island of Newfoundland. Shanneyganock's vocal passions, from toe-tapping songs to heart-breaking ballads, are woven with hard driving instrumentals that deliver consistent, enthusiastic shows night after night. Their 3 previous albums are entitled: Scallywags, Live at O'reilly's and The Long Haul. Their fourth and most recent album is entitled, Set You Free.
The band continues to be a crowd pleaser wherever they perform and the energy of their stage show seem to capture the hearts of the fans with their upbeat dance music and beautiful ballads.
In their careers the band members have been influenced by and inspired by the likes of Ralph O'Brien, Fergus O'Byrne and Dermott O'Reilly who took time to teach them the finer points of music. The band has been nominated for four music awards in the Newfoundland and Labrador Music Association for 2004-Entertainer of The Year-Album of The Year (Set You Free)-Group of The Year and Folk/Roots Group of The Year.
