How can we forget, the late Great Harry Hibbs, from Bell Island, Newfoundland! Harry passed away on December 21, 1989 at the age of 47, after a brief battle with Bone Cancer in Toronto, Ontario. His legend lives on, and all his friends, family and fans will never forget him and his legacy. So much has been written about Harry and his music, that if accumulated all together, would fill volumes. Atlantic Seabreeze is now bringing to life again some memories of his past, as on June 28/03, in Cambridge, Ontario, a major tribute will be bestowed upon him during the first ever, East Coast Music Festival, June 27-29, 2003 at Churchill Park Arena and grounds. June 28/03 will be a day to remember HARRY HIBBS.To begin this special day, in tribute to Harry, we ask his fans and friends, to visit Harry's tomb at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, in north Toronto, at Highway 27, just above Steeles. Harry rests in the large building on the north side, and can be found easily, by seeing his famous picture on the incription.
Without going into details here are some of the many highlighs of Harry's career:
-Newfoundland's favourite son for 21 years and was Newfoundland's music for thousands of people across Canada.
-One of Canada's biggest recording artists between 1968-1975
-By 1982, Harry had released 15 albums, eight of which were platinum-selling records. Over his career, 26 albums were recorded and made him the most successful Newfoundland solo recording artist of his time.
-He was the first Canadian musician to be Certified Gold for sales of 100,000 records
-He went on to repeat this achievement with his next seven albums and never since duplicated by any other Canadian
-His total career sales topped 1.5 million albums, Newfoundland's most successful musical export
-He pioneered vocalizing with accordion playing, combining country and western themes with Newfoundland traditional music.
-He co-founded the first Newfoundland Club which now number over 250 worldwide
-He popularized East Coast Music in the urban centers and transcended cultural boundaries to achieve mass appeal
-He starred in his own television series for seven years and toured constantly through Canada, the United States and parts of Europe
-On February 11, 2001, the East Coast Music Association recognized Harry for his 21 years as a performer, musician, songwriter and entertainer. Harry was receipent of The Helen Creighton Award for Lifetime Achievement posthumously at the East Coast Music Awards.
