Ashley MacIssac, a 31 year old fiddler from Cape Breton, surprised all those who were attending a Cape Breton Ceildh at the Lord Nelson Hotel in Halifax at ECMA 2007, when he & his boyfriend, 19 year old Andrew Stokes from Portugal/Toronto exchanged vows on stage during the Ceilidh. While fiddle/piano player Howie MacDonald and Stuart Cameron were performing, the wedding march was abruptly played and the crowd erupted into a frenzy.
Halifax Justice of the Peace, Roxanne Perry was called to the stage and performed the ceremony, while Ashley and Andrew exchanged their vows and exchanged glittering wedding bands and then finally they pledged their love for each other. After signing the legal documents, the Judge pronounced the couple as Ashley and Andrew MacIsaac. They then looked each other in the eyes as they played a fiddle duet and happily posed for pictures, as JP Cormier took the stage saying there was no way to follow what had just taken place. The judge, Roxanne Perry stated after the service, she definitely married two people in love.
