ASDickNolanPerformingatHisAug05Tribute.jpg On August 7/05, Dick Nolan, the most well-known singer/songewriter from Belle Island, celebrated his 50th year in the music business. Dick is in his 66th year and is semi-retired in South River, ASDickNolanandWuifeMariebyDaveWhiteTheCompass.jpg Nfld., and he is writing his memoirs at the moment. What an amazing life and music career the Juno Nominated music artist had. He left Nfld in the early 60's to booming Ontario and never looked back.

Dick and Ellis Coles of Carmenville wrote Aunt Martha's Sheep and the rest was history. As a result of this song, he appeared on the Grand Ole Opry in 1973 on stage with Dolly Parton, Porter Wagner and Jeanne Pruett who had the smash hit song, Satin Sheets at that time. Over his career, he released over 40 albums and had 3 gold records.

On Aug 7/05, Dick was honored on Belle Island with a musical celebration with over 300 people attending. The whole town seemed to appreciate what Dick had done for Nfld. during his time in the music business and many of his albums were on display at the Heritage Hall. Some presentations were made on behalf of the people of Belle Island and Nfld. The Mayor of Wabana, Gary Gosine, presented Dick with a Certificate of Excellence. Another presentation included a portrait of Dick painted by Mr. MacLean, the drummer from the old Newfoundland Showband. It was an excellent portrait. The highlight of the evening may have been Dick sitting at the table eating mutton and onions, when the RCMP officer from Belle Island along with Aunt Martha came and arrested Dick. This was planned, however it was obvious Dick had no idea what was going on and it was priceless to see.

The musicians who honoured Dick included Bill Whalen Sr., Bill Whalen Jr., Don Crane, Rod Chipman, Ian Chipman (The Fables), Terry Parsons, Nate Hammond, Jimmy Shea, Clyde Hibbs, Don Hibbs, Reg Crane, Dominic Slade and Con Parsons. An unbelievable stand out from Trenton, Ontario, 15 year-old button accordionist Jamie Spurvey, had the audience dazzled with his outstanding energetic accordion tunes. Jamie has his roots in Fox Harbour, Nfld.

Dick was in fine form and sang many of his classic hit songs as well as some songs from his new album, Memories of Johnny Cash. It was a night to remember for those who attended this great event, and Dick's return to the local stage, was a treat for the fans for the Godfather of Newfoundland-Country.
