He was raised Roman Catholic and attended Memorial University of Newfoundland in St John's where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. There he met Sean McCann, Bob Hallet and Darrel Power with whom he helped to form Great Big Sea. They played together for 20 years and were considered as Canada's Greatest East Coast Rock Bands. They produced 9 albums, double-disc hits retrospective and 2 DVD's releases have been declared Gold or Platinum and sold a combined 2 million in Canada alone.
Alan primarily plays electric and acoustic guitars and the bouzouki for live performances but knows to play mandolin and banjo.
Alan's first solo CD entitled, BOY ON THE BRIDGE was in 2012 and was a incredible production, which resulted into two singles including I'VE SEEN A LITTLE and TESTIFY. Testify was nominated for a JUNO and it included artists Hawksley Workman, Jim Cuddy, Ron Hynes and actor musician Russell Crowe.
Alan recently finished his first book entitled WHERE I BELONG. It is a lyrical and captivating musical memoir about growing up in the tiny fishing village of Petty Harbour and then taking it to the world stage.
Alan now just released his second album entitled, SO LETS GO and now on tour promoting the album across Canada and a number of USA cities from Jan 31/15 to May 8 in Halifax. Check Alan's website for all information regarding Alan posted above.
