Percy Sledge Passes Away at 73 Years of Age

Percy Sledge, 73 Years old, the Alabama- born R&B powerhouse who topped the Billboard Hot 100 with WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN in 1966, passed away this morning, April 14 in his Baton Rouge, Louisina home . He died of cancer.

During the mid-sixties Sledge worked a a hospital nurse while touring to get his music career off the ground. WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN, his first song recorded under contract, was a smash hit and would endure as his signature song. The song was co-written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright, his bandmates in a group called The Esquires Combo. It was the only song the duo wrote together, and the first Muscle shoals single to hit the No 1 on the top 100.

Sledge was inducted into the Rock and Roll Of Fame in 2005. Sledge is survived by his wife and clildren.
